Lili Dujourie’s work includes early video works, paper collages, sculptures and installations from various phases that remain in a state of categorical ambiguity and fleetingness. The reflection on art-historical models and categories as well as on literary and film genres alongside the emotional compression of space is a recurring characteristic of her work. She provokes an intellectual, sensual and poetic engagement on the part of the viewer.

The wall sculptures by Lili Dujourie are fashioned from three-strand wire: sometimes it falls lightly like ribbons or strips of paper, sometimes the modelled sculpture looks like a chalk drawing on the wall. She has titled all the works in this series with first names. documenta 12 is showing Gyrus (2000), Dolores (2001) and Cecilia (2001) – each of which could be a woman’s head, with hair now long and straight, now curly. She plays with the trompe l’oeil effect as a means of challenging our perception and provoking new ways of seeing.
